Think. Dream. Do.

Laura Jeffrey Academy (LJA) is a tuition-free public middle school in St. Paul MN. Our inclusive, culturally diverse learning environment is open to all students in grades 5-8.

At LJA, we develop scholars with big hearts, bright futures and the ability to think critically. They are encouraged to explore their potential, discover their brilliance and develop their intellect.

OUR TEACHER-POWERED SCHOOL MAKES A DIFFERENCE

Throughout the school day, we integrate exploration, discovery and knowledge with our scholars’ need to develop a solid command of subjects.

Our teachers connect with our scholars as individuals and create classroom settings that provide for a variety of social and cultural interactions, essential to learning. We provide the support necessary for scholars to be successful, both inside and outside of the classroom.

This valuable approach to education recognizes each scholar’s unique learning abilities, addresses their needs and encourages individual talents. In addition, it allows LJA to:

  • Provide small class sizes and individualized attention

  • Offer a comprehensive liberal arts education

  • Deliver differentiated coursework

  • Support critical thinking, curiosity and vigorous intellectual inquiry

  • Focus on increased competence and confidence in math and science (STEM)

  • Meet all state and federal curriculum standards

  • Nurture academic, emotional and physical well-being

OUR PROMISE AND GUIDING PRINCIPLES

We help LJA scholars find their spark! Our hands-on learning environment allows scholars to ask questions, make informed choices, share their voice and, ultimately, have a positive impact at school and in the community.

  • Practicing Mutual Responsibility and Individual Accountability. We work together to solve problems and are accountable for our own choices and our impact on the community and the environment as a whole.

  • Searching for Truths. We build communities of inquiry capable of supporting free and open conversation on the most important issues.

  • Building Empathy. We try to be aware of the situations and experiences of other people so that we can act in ways that are sensitive to the way they see the world.

  • Developing Generosity of Spirit. We assume that each of us tries to do what we believe is right and just, and we ask each other how we see things that lead us to act as we do.

  • Becoming Competent. We help each other become increasingly able to bring about the results we each desire. We believe that effort creates competence and competence helps build confidence.

  • Acknowledging Paradox and Dilemma. We make progress at LJA by opening our minds to complexity while continuing to take action in response to the paradox or dilemma.

  • Recognizing Strength in Vulnerability. We value help from others in seeing our short comings and potential as we continue to evolve and grow.
